ABOUT: Located near the ancient city of Caltagirone in Sicily are 37 hectares which the Lo Certo family calls Tenuta del Nanfro. The Lo Certo family has been a pioneering force in the organic viticulture movement in Italy and has been a major influence on the countless natural winemakers on the island. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a wine made in the southeast corner of the island in the volcanic foothills of Mount Etna. The wine has DOCG status and must be at least 40% Frappato and no more than 60% Nero dAvola. Year to year these wines are a true value, excellent quality and a low price. And if ever you find yourself on the island of Sicily and need a place to stay, check them out.
TASTE: Amazing cherry red color (Cerasuolo!). It’s immediately clear this wine is from a hot and dry place. Lifted aromas of cherries, campfire, dark chocolate, licorice, dry earth, all of it. The palate reinforces the dried cherry fruit flavor with an excellent shot of acidity, medium body and medium tannin. This is a big, smoky mouthful of delicious cherry red juice with dashes of salinity, complexity, and a long finish. This is one of those versatile wines that could pair with a wide range of foods.
PAIR: Indian food, pasta salads, anything tomato-based, Arancini, and Palermo-style pizza.
