ABOUT: On the high, rugged slopes of the Majella National Park in Abruzzo, Italy you’ll find Marabelle, a dedicated biodynamic winery making wine in the IGT Terre di Chieti. The high elevation and closeness of the Adriatic Sea creates the all-desirable wide diurnal shift, important for retaining acidity and freshness. The soils are limestone dominate, the vines average age is 40 years, grapes are harvested by hand and the fermentation is spontaneous. They make greats reds but we were bowled over by this Pinot Grigio, starting with the pinkish-orange color which truly lays deeply suggestive aromas and flavors. Not to mention a concentration that is unlike your average Pinot Grigio, dense fruit flavors with fresh acidity for days…The price is right, you’d be a damn fool not to drink this over summer.
TASTE: The Marabelle Pinot Grigio 2020 is pink in color but white in style, if that makes sense. The youthful, shy aromas hint at oranges, lemons, strawberries, and salt and the palate loudly confirms them. As mentioned before, the concentration is appealing and adds an unexpected weight with a healthy amount of acidity. Thinking of a single word to describe this wine isn’t hard; attractive. And the value is off the chart, hard work went into making this wine so you best show up and drink this down.
PAIR: Chive roasted potatoes, roasted garlic naan, Pumpkin Raita, pasta with pesto and peas, vegetarian Kimbap, crispy potato fritters, and scallion pancakes.
