ABOUT: The Pic in the name is for Michelin-starred chef Anne-Sophie Pic, resident of Valence where Cornas vines are practically in their backyard. The Chapoutier is indeed Michel Chapoutier, the famed Rhone winemaker who has been a neighbor and pal of Anne-Sophie for years. These two industry superstars paired up and started making wines in the early 2000’s, first vintage being 2012 to rave reviews. The Syrah in this bottle of Cornas comes from organically certified vineyards of different soil types, granitic soils on high slopes, limestone and some grapes from the foothills. Native yeasts are used for fermentation which takes place in concrete tanks and the wines are aged in old oak barrels for 14 months. I can’t think of a couple of more precise palates to be in the business of making wine. An outstanding value and perfect for a nice Friday night dimly-lit dinner.
