ABOUT: This is the first wine we’ve stocked from the preeminent Rheingau producer Weingut Kunstler (for shame!). Mainly situated in and around the town of Hockheim, the Kunstler clan have a history dating back to the mid 17th century. In 1965 Franz Kunstler re-established the wine enterprise and in 1992 son Gunter picked up the reigns and has been killing it ever since. Much of the land is farmed organically, challenging since they’re so close to the humid subzone of the river Main, but successful none the less. The Holle vineyard is a 15 degree slanted slab of clay marl soil with bits of limestone producing some of the finest, long lived Riesling along the river Main. Expect tons of development for many years to come from this wine. TASTE: Terry Theise’s note about this wine: This Hochheim “GG” seems always to show best in cooler years, when its savory generosity isn’t overbearing. Like now! A first impression of cask is quickly overwhelmed by a seductive palate, a savory malty wine, maple and candy-cap mushrooms; mineral embedded in the sweetest doughiest swoon of charm and loveliness. PAIR: Southwest lime corn salad, tomato chickpea salad with cilantro, and lemon-parmesan-garlic scape scrambled eggs.
